When an aftermarket transmission cooler is installed, you can plumb it a number of ways. Still, I'm curious: Does anyone know what their AW71 runs for fluid temps? Namely those of you who have ditched the radiator cooler and gone with just an external air cooler? I'm wondering how long it takes to heat up to temp (if it ever does), how hot it gets during traffic/hard driving, and how fast it cools things down after a few pulls. So you'd have the radiator cooler to keep the system warm enough, plus the air cooler to help bring temps back in check after some high boost romps. You don't want your ATF temp under about 150?F from what I've heard. I speculate that this is the best "daily driver" trans cooler setup, especially for those who live in cooler climates. ![]() Though I'd mount the cooler out in front of the condenser since I have an OEM pusher fan I plan to install. (Line from trans -> radiator cooler -> air cooler -> trans return). Performance diesel transmission coolers have higher capacity airflow with more thermal efficiency to keep your transmission fluid temperatures under control during heavy use. The routing was how I'm considering running my coolers. It uses a typical radiator end tank trans cooler, plus a ~5"x10"x1" air cooler mounted on top of the crossmember that my 940 radiator drops through (between the intercooler and radiator, I believe). Poked around under the hood of an '87 780T at the junkyard today. In not-so-normal conditions, I wonder how fast this Nissens cooler can do its thing and cool the 3-4 gallons of ATF in the trans system. So with my 82?C Tstat (180?F), I'm right where I should be for ATF temps, at least during normal operating conditions. Doing some interweb research, I've found that most sites list the ideal temp as 175-200?F. ![]() Add even more performance to your transmission by evenly distributing Air over the coolers surface with a stator fan & cooler combination. For whatever reason, I had it in my head that the "ideal" temp for ATF was 150-175?F. JEGS High-Performance Transmission Coolers are ultrasonically soldered, electrostatically powder-coated, and pressure tested at 150 psi for complete reliability. I agree, it's better (heat transfer wise) than your basic air cooler, but it isn't the heat transfer that concerns me as much as the actual temperature. ![]()
